About Hamburg Airport
Hamburg (HAM) Airport, also named Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel
Airport, is an international airport located 8 km (5
miles) away from the center of Hamburg, Germany. In 2008
it served 12,840,000 passengers, thus being the fifth
busiest commercial airport in Germany, after Berlin
Tegel Airport.
With 17 jet-ways and 54 apron positions, the airport
hosts two terminal-buildings which have a high, curved
ceiling designed in the shape of a wing and which are
connected by a Plaza-building, the place where the
security check is, all along with the shops,
restaurants, lounges and other facilities. It should be
also noted that on the arrival level (that is level 0,
while the departures are on level 1) there are 14
baggage claim areas. These three main buildings were
consolidated in the early 1990s, during the
modernization plan, known as HAM21. The airport now
houses Lufthansa and other Star Alliance partners.
Its history dates back in 1911, the year when it was
created from private funding by the Hamburger
Luftschiffhallen GmbH (HLG). However, it is only in
1945, during the British occupation, that the airport
was given its actual name, Hamburg Airport.
